Funeral rites are the most elaborate of all the life-cycle ceremonies and the ones entered into most fully by the monks. It is a basic teaching of Buddhism that existence is suffering, whether birth, daily living, old age or dying. This teaching is never in a stronger position than when death enters a home.

Monks chant the sutras that will benefit the deceased, and to conduct all funeral rites and memorial services. To conduct the rites for the dead may be considered the one indispensable service rendered the community by the monks.

Mrs. Tawin Sirisute?s body will be kept for 50 days at the temple. Cremations are deferred this long to show love and respect for the deceased and to perform religious rites which will benefit the departed. During the 50 days will monks will pray at the temple for Mrs Sirisute. Your donations will go these monks.

As along as the body is present the spirit can benefit by the gifts presented, the sermons preached and the chants uttered before it. This thought lies behind the use of the bhusa yhong ribbon which extends from the body within the coffin to the chanting monks before it. The dead may thus have contact with the holy sutras. When the body is cremated the spirit is more definitely cut off from the world, it is best therefore not to force that spirit to enter the preta world finally and irrevocably until it has had the benefit of a number of religious services designed to improve its status.

Mrs. Tawin Sirisute welcomed many students from all over the world into her home.

Here are some memories shared with us by some, of the many, grateful Thai Boxing Association Students.

Remembering Mrs.Tawin Sirisute

==========

In Loving Memory of Tawin Sirisute:

I first met Ajarn Chai’s mom in 1994. Ajarn Chai’s dad was still alive at the time. And what struck me was how welcome we were made to feel at the Sirisute household.

On that first trip when the taxi dropped us off, he saw the plaque on the front gate, pointed to it and said, with reverence; “Royal”.

Wendy and I go to the Sirisute household every year, and mom always had a smile for us while we all sat around the kitchen table drinking tea and, through Ajarn Chai as interpreter, reconnecting.

The taxi drivers single word, spoken 14 years ago captures Tawin Sirisute’s essence; Royal - yes, but more importantly kind, and always with that great smile.

We will miss her, and will always remember her.

Ajarn Chai Seminar

November 3rd, 2008

Ajarn Chai was at the Academy for his 21st annual seminar October 25th, and 26th. Since Ajarn is planning on slowing down a bit, (actually a lot) after this years campaign, we decided to do something different. We had the seminar at the Academy and limited attendance to Academy instructors and a couple of lucky senior students.

Ajarn provided some invaluable links back to Ajarn Suwan, with some ‘old school’ timing drills, that looked easy, but proved to be challenging timing wise, and eventually a ‘calf killer’.

We also had a different format. We gave Ajarn Sunday afternoon off. We all went back to my place, kicked back and enjoyed some ‘good food and good  company’ time.

Ajarn Chai is deserving of our respect and recognition for the over forty years of dedication to the art of Muay Thai. He brought the art to the United States in 1968, when the art was basically unknown. Ajarn Chai respectfully defended Muay Thai, establishing a reputation and foundation from which laid the foundation for EVERYONE who came after.

So, after 40 years of ceaseless dedication Ajarn is going to spend this winter in Thailand and teach a much reduced schedule next year.

I am honored to have known Ajarn Chai since 1985. His strength of character, honor and unceasing work for Muay Thai will result as him being remembered as ‘One of the great ones’.

Fight Results:

October 24th Manhattan

Kun Kruu Sacha was invited to an 8 man tournament hosted by ‘Friday Night Fights’. Sacha earned the invitation to this strong field of competitiors by his previous fight there against Liam Tarrant, who was undefeated, to whom he lost a close decision.

Sacha drew Turan Hasanov a Russian trained fighter with an 11-1 record. Sacha’s record was 4-4, but his losses have always been close decisions to much more experienced fighters. First 2 rounds Sacha dominated at all Muay Thai fighting ranges. Having built a strong lead, Sacha did the smart thing and picked his shots and used good footwork for a more laid back third round. Unanimous decision to Sacha.

Next round Sacha was paired with Gabe Dougherty from Philadelphia, known for his heavy hands and 6 wins by knock-out. He had beaten Dan Gurzenda by knock-out in his first round fight.

Dan’s strategy was to stick with his strength, using ‘down the pipe’ strong jabs and straight right hands, finishing up with knee or leg kick attacks. Sacha focused on covering Dan’s offence and following up with hard kick and accurate punching counterattack. Unanimous decision for Sacha.

WKA North American Junior-Middleweight Title Match

Sacha fought for the title against Pittsburgh native Marcus Fischer, who we had seen at the Iowa TBA classic, where he advanced to the final only to lose a controversial decision to a fighter from Ajarn Mike Myles gym in Calgary.

Marcus was Sacha’s biggest and strongest opponent of the night. Unfortunately in the first exchange Sacha was on the receiving end of an accidental head-butt that closed up his right eye. Most of the fight was spent in the clinch. Sacha was winning the hand exchanges and Marcus was winning the kicking exchanges with the clinch being very evenly matched. Both fighters showed great skills and sportsmanship, which was evident in every fighters performance that night.

The fight went to the judges and Marcus was awarded the split decision.

Re-match?

Some of the strongest middleweights were present for a very difficult format; three fights in one night with little rest between.

October 4th Ottawa

The Academy had three fighters on the OAMA card held in Ottawa.

First time fighter Jerome Lavoie fought at 185 pounds against a fighter whose record was 1-1 from Ronin MMA of Ottawa. Jerome fought well in the first round, but found his cardio was lacking in rounds 2 and 3. After several standing 8 counts, the referee stopped the fight on a TKO in the 3rd round. Time to train harder Jerome!

First time fighter Christian Beaupre was matched against a fighter from Sam Locks Pradal Serei gym in Ottawa. Christian took control of the fight in the first round, scoring well with kicks, punches and in the clinch. Rounds 2 and 3 saw more of the same from Christian.

Christian’s first fight looked like a 4th or 5th fight. Christian showed good composure, maintained pressure on his opponent and generally looked like a more experienced fighter than someone in their first competitive fight.

Congratulations Chris

Academy Instructor Faisal Ibrahim competed in one of the two main-events of the evening, fighting a much more experienced fighter from Chris Kew’s gym in Stratford On. As it was an ‘event title’ fight it was a 5 rounder, and an ‘A-Class’ fight; head-gear only, no shin-guards or chest-guard, elbows to the body and limbs allowed.

Faisal who fights at 147 lbs. is 6′3” and was significantly taller than his opponent. It was an exciting fight with Faisal’s opponent scoring well with leg kicks. Faisal scored with more variety of techniques landing kicks, punches and was strong in the clinch. For most of the fight Faisal had his opponent backing up. He also scored several tips to his opponents face.

The fight went the distance and the judges awarded the fight to Faisal’s opponent. The silence of the crowd after the decision mirrors my take of the fight 3 rounds to 2 for Faisal. Like they say; ‘anytime you leave a fight in the hands of the judges….’

Congratulations on a great effort by all fighters

Dominic Poissant will have his first mma fight Nov. 10 in Montreal…

the card, which is a tko event sees Dom matched with an opponent from London Ont.

Good luck Dom Paula Piilonen - split decision loss.  Dominic Poissant - loss tko.  Kruu Faisal - win, split decision . Meghan Butler - win, unanimous decision. Kruu Sacha - loss, split decision. Details…….

Paula’s first fight in Montreal on Oct. 13 was a good first outing. The afternoon card started an hour late, and Paula was moved up from 3rd to 1st fight. While Paula scored the more telling blows, her opponent outscored her…it was a close round. Second round was similar to the first. In the third Paula had her opponent in full retreat, scoring nicely with hands. Trapping her opponent on the ropes Paula threw a knee, which, unfortunately landed on her opponents head. The result was a one point deduction that probably was the deciding factor in the fight. Paula ‘came out clean’, I don’t think the same can be said for her opponent.

Great first fight Paula

Dom fought in Ali Nestor’s UGC event Nov. 10. Dom had a bit of first fight freeze happen, took a leg kick, but he immediately took down his opponent. Caught in a non-threatening guillotine Dom spent most of the round working out of that position.

Second round started like the first with Dom taking a leg kick and once again taking down his opponent, this time with a nice high amplitude throw. After some some scrambling Dom disengaged, and made the mistake of turning his back as he got up. Landing an illegal punch to the back of the head, which wasn’t picked up by the referee, his opponent kept punching pressure on Dom, who was protecting in turtle position. The referees stoppage was early. But Dom wasn’t hurt.

More Striking Dom!!

CAMTAO Event Hosted by Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts

We had three fighters in this first Muay Thai event held in Ottawa. OAMA owner Pat Cooligan, and Nick put on a good first event - thanks.

Kruu Faisal’s fight wasn’t a very pretty one, as his opponents tactic was to rush into the clinch and attempt to throw Faisal. He was successful several times, but in the process Faisal was landing high tiips, jabs and right hands, and one particularly pretty long range knee that I think his opponent was glad to have his chest protector on. Faisal went on to win by split decision.

Meghan’s first fight looked like it was her 3rd or 4th. She showed good movement, threw a variety of attacks, winning a close first, a convincing second, and a dominating third round. Meg won by unanimous decision. After the fight Meg said; “I have to thank Paula for sparring with me, she hit me way harder than that girl!”

Great Fight Meg

Kruu Sacha fought in an A class fight; no shinguards, padded elbows allowed. He fought Devon Henry from Kruu Chris Kew’s gym in Cambridge.

I think this was the best fight of the night. Both fighters showed clean technique, great sportsmanship, and a hard fight. While it was a close fight, I thought Sacha won, apparently, so did the crowd that went completely quiet when the decision was awarded to Devon……but it was still a GREAT FIGHT.

Congratulations to all the fighters

Kruu Sacha is scheduled to fight in New York City Jan. 11, 2008,

Alain Sylvestre ranked #3 Lumpinee Stadium

October 10th, 2007

Former Academy member Alain Sylvestre just got ranked #3 at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok.  This means Alain is ranked # 3 in the World!!! I don’t think another Canadian has ever accomplished this.

According to Alain: “After I win my fight on Nov. 3, I will go for middle weight belt W.P.M.F. 72 kg. That is going to be a really hard fight.”

We will all be cheering for Alain on Nov. 3, and when he fights for the title.
